I've heard there is money available for recycling electronics...

The California Integrated Waste Management Board has adopted emergency regulations to implement portions of the Electronic Waste Recycling Act of 2003. This landmark legislation established a funding system for the collection and recycling of certain electronic wastes. Collectors and recyclers of "covered electronic wastes" can participate in a payment system that will foster the development of reuse and recycling opportunities. Interested parties must secure approval to participate. Unlike California's "bottle bill", covered electronic wastes have no redemption value.

Who is approved to participate in the payment system?

A listing of recyclers and collectors that have been approved to participate in the payment system is being maintained on the California Integrated Waste Management Board website. This list will be updated regularly as additional entities meet the requirements for participation by complying with regulations of the CIWMB and Department of Toxic Substances Control.

The application to be an approved collector and/or recycler within the payment system is available on the CIWMB web site. Interested parties should also review all requirements within the emergency regulations, and comply with any DTSC requirements regarding notification and inspections.

As the Integrated Waste Management Board (CIWMB), in consultation with the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), works to implement this important legislation, more information will be available through this website. Note that any guidance provided by the CIWMB should not substitute for careful reading of the enabling statute or subsequent regulations.
